Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Saturday emphasised the need to restructure the OIC, making it a vibrant organisation to face the challenges confronted by the Muslim Ummah. He was addressing a press conference here at the Organisation of Islamic Conference headquarters after a meeting the OIC Secretary General, Dr. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. Replying to a question the Prime Minister said that President General Pervez Musharraf had presented the concept of enlightened moderation while addressing the OIC meeting in Malaysia last year.

Shaukat Aziz said this concept is getting support within the Organisation and emphasised the need to make this concept more effective to face the negative propaganda by the Western media.

He said after the 9/11 incident, there has been misunderstanding about Islam in the world, therefore the OIC has to play an effective role to project Islam as a religion of peace, moderation and harmony.

The Prime Minister said the OIC members expect a lot from the newly elected secretary general and assured Dr. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu full support from Pakistan in re-organisation and restructuring of the OIC.

In response to a query about the role of OIC in the world, Shaukat Aziz said he had also held meetings with the current Chairman of the OIC, Prime Minister of Malaysia Seri Dato Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and exchanged views to make the OIC an effective representative of the Muslim Ummah.

The Prime Minister said there is a need to project inter-faith harmony to remove the misperception of Islam in the world. He said the concept of enlightened moderation would be further discussed in the next meeting of Commission of Eminent Persons being held in Pakistan within the next few weeks.

Earlier, Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu welcoming Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said he is the first Prime Minister to visit the OIC headquarters after his assuming the charge of the Organisation's secretary general.

He appreciated Pakistan's contribution in the OIC and said that with the help of Pakistan and other member countries, the organisation would be made more effective.

The OIC secretary general also hosted a luncheon in honour of the Prime Minister and members of his entourage.

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz also met Afghan President Hamid Karzai on the sidelines of the Jeddah Economic Forum (JEF).

Both the leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional and international issues of mutual interests.
